2024 Exe-X South West Alumnae Group – private evening visit to Exeter Cathedral Library and Archive

Repeat of a very popular, small group event from 2022. Housed in the West Wing of the Cathedral Bishop’s Palace is the Cathedral Library and Archive containing many thousands of books and documents spanning the 10th to 21st centuries. It includes medieval manuscripts, early printed books and modern published texts on a remarkable range of subjects including local history, theology, medicine, science and more … as well as unique original records documenting the history of the Cathedral, its buildings, people and former estates.

Event details

Our private tour and ‘show and tell’ session with the Cathedral Archivist and fellow alumna Ellie Jones gives the opportunity to get up-close to a selection of treasures from the collection and gain an understanding of their history, creation and context. As we are a female graduate group, the session will also highlight some stories linked to the achievements of women, including Queen Matilda, one of the landholders recorded in the Exon Domesday and Queen Edith, present at the installation of our first bishop in 1050, along with beautifully illustrated books with female connections such as botanicals and a book of hours. The session is informal and questions are encouraged.

The start time of 6.30pm gives time to attend Evensong at the Cathedral beforehand, if you wish. You are also welcome to join us afterwards at the nearby Turk’s Head pub for drinks and informal networking of our women’s graduate group.

Please note: This is by necessity a small group and bookings will be taken on a first-come, first served basis to a maximum of 15.
